A unity government

Parties should aim for the widest possible government rather than a narrow majority.

No party has ever won 61 seats. Every Israeli government has been a coalition.

What is at stake

No party has ever won 61 of the Knesset's 120 seats on its own. Every government is a coalition, and narrow ones depend on small parties that can bring them down at will. Several 2026 lists are running on a promise to build a wide government spanning both blocs.

The case for

  • A wide cabinet picks ministers from both blocs, not only from the winning side.
  • A government holding 80 seats cannot be toppled by a faction of five. Small parties lose their veto.
  • After the judicial-overhaul crisis and two years of war, a cabinet drawn from both camps would lower the temperature.

The case against

  • Parties that disagree on conscription, the courts and the Palestinians will avoid those subjects. Nothing gets decided.
  • The 2020 Netanyahu–Gantz unity government lasted seven months and never passed a budget.
  • Voters chose a direction. A government of everyone carries out nobody's programme.

Both sides get the same number of points at comparable length. That is a rule of this site, not a coincidence.

What the next Knesset could decide

This is settled in the talks that follow October 27. The president hands the mandate to whoever can assemble 61 seats, and the shape of the government is fixed in the coalition agreement, not at the ballot box.
